Camping in Cold Weather

Camping in Cold Weather

Camping in below-freezing weather can be tough, especially when it comes to keeping your water pipes and the area underneath your RV (called the underbelly) from freezing. Here’s an easy-to-follow guide:

  1. Wrap Your Pipes
Cover the pipes with foam tubes or special electric heat tape to keep them warm. This helps stop them from freezing when it gets really cold.
  2. Use a Heated Hose
Buy a heated water hose that stays warm even in freezing weather. This makes sure water keeps flowing to your RV.
  3. Take Care of the Sewer Hose
If you don’t need to use the sewer hose all the time, disconnect it and store it. If you do use it, wrap it in insulation or heat tape to keep it from freezing. If possible put use pvc pipe to run your hose through for added protection from bends and kinks.
  4. Block the Cold Air Under Your RV
Put something around the bottom of your RV, like foam boards or a special skirt. This keeps cold air out and helps trap heat.
  5. Add a Heater Underneath
Use a small heater under your RV to keep the area warm. Make sure it’s safe for enclosed spaces and won’t cause a fire.
  6. Keep Your Tanks Warm
Stick heating pads on your water tanks. These pads plug in and keep the tanks from turning into blocks of ice.
  7. Run Your RV Heater
Use your RV’s built-in heater. It not only warms you up inside but often pushes warm air underneath to help the pipes and tanks.
  8. Open Cabinet Doors
Leave the doors under your sinks open. This lets the heat inside your RV reach the pipes behind the cabinets.
  9. Let Faucets Drip
Turn on the faucet just a little so it drips. Moving water is harder to freeze than still water.
  10. Be Ready for Power Outages
Have a backup plan in case the electricity goes out. You can use propane heaters or extra blankets to stay warm, but make sure there’s plenty of fresh air to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

Extra Tips:
Keep a Hairdryer Handy: If something freezes, you can carefully warm it up with a hairdryer.
Check Temperatures
: Use a thermometer to see if it’s getting too cold under your RV.

With these steps, you can stay warm, keep your RV safe, and enjoy your camping trip even in freezing weather!
