How do I inspect and clean AC filters?

Air Conditioner filters should be inspected and cleaned at minimum every three months, though it is recommended to clean them monthly when in constant use.

To clean an RV AC filter, start by turning off the air conditioner and unplugging it for safety. Locate the filter, typically found behind a vent cover or ceiling panel in the AC unit. Carefully remove the filter, inspecting it for damage such as holes or tears; if damaged, replacement is necessary. For reusable filters, clean them using warm water and mild dish soap, gently scrubbing with a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt and debris. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach, as they can damage the filter material. Rinse the filter thoroughly under running water until all soap residue is gone. Allow the filter to air dry completely before reinstalling it to prevent mold growth and odor issues. Once dry, place the filter back into its housing and secure the cover. For deeper cleaning, a solution of equal parts vinegar and water can be used to prevent bacteria growth, applied after rinsing and left to sit for 15 minutes before washing off. Cleaning the filter every 1-3 months is recommended, more frequently if traveling in dusty areas or using the AC often.
